Over the past few days, many of you have likely seen reports about the recent attempted child abduction in Littleton. Thankfully, the child was able to get away safely, and a suspect has been arrested. (Littleton Police Department)
As parents ourselves, stories like this hit hard.
At Legacy Martial Arts, we believe family safety is bigger than martial arts. Teaching self-defense is important, but so is helping kids develop awareness, confidence, courage, and the ability to speak up when something feels wrong.
That’s why we wanted to take a moment to encourage every family in our community to have calm, age-appropriate conversations about personal safety with their children.
Moving Beyond “Stranger Danger”
One of the biggest things child safety experts recommend today is moving away from simply teaching “stranger danger.”
Why?
Because children often imagine unsafe people as obvious “bad guys” who look scary or suspicious. In reality, unsafe situations are often much more complicated than that.
Instead of teaching fear, experts recommend teaching awareness and decision-making skills.
At Legacy Martial Arts, we proudly support child safety education through the KidSmartz program alongside the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the U.S. Secret Service. The goal of these programs is to help families build practical safety habits while helping kids feel confident — not afraid.
Important Safety Conversations to Have With Your Kids
Here are a few simple but important reminders parents can review with their children:
Trust Your Instincts
Teach kids that if something feels “off,” uncomfortable, or unsafe, they should trust that feeling and get help immediately.
Stay With Friends
Whenever possible, kids should stay with a group of friends or trusted adults, especially in public places.
Adults Should Not Ask Kids for Help
Children should understand that safe adults do not ask kids for rides, help finding pets, or keeping secrets from parents.
Never Go Anywhere Without Permission
Kids should know they should never leave with another adult unless their parent or guardian has clearly said it is okay.
Use Their Voice
If a child feels threatened or someone grabs them, encourage them to yell loudly:
– “This is not my parent!”
– “Help!”
– “No!”
Drawing attention is one of the best safety tools kids have.
Identify Trusted Adults
Help children identify safe adults they can go to for help, such as teachers, police officers, coaches, or parents with children nearby.
The Goal Is Confidence, Not Fear
This is important:
We do not want kids living in fear.
The goal is not to scare children. The goal is to prepare them.
When kids feel educated, aware, and confident, they are more likely to make strong decisions under pressure.
At Legacy Martial Arts, this is one of the reasons we spend so much time helping kids build confidence, discipline, communication skills, and courage both on and off the mat.
Free Family Safety Resources
The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children offers excellent free resources for families through the KidSmartz program.
Parents can find videos, activities, conversation starters, and age-appropriate safety education tools here:

We encourage every family to spend a few minutes reviewing these resources together.
